Epidemic of Rippers!!

Fri Feb 1, 2008, 7:37 AM
I don't think so - More like an epidemic of whiners

I think that these complaints about "rippers everywhere you turn" is getting a little overblown.

Many of the recent complaints I am reading are not about people claiming authorship of the work of other artists.

People are seeing websites featuring and crediting their work without prior notification.

This is not copyright infringement and more than that it is free publicity. There is an aspect of copyright called "fair use" which allows me (or anyone) to review your work, quote from it and feature examples of it without notifying you as long as I give you credit for being the creator of the work. Notice would be nice but it is not a requirement and failing to give it does not make me (or anyone) a ripper.

I am as protective of my work as the next artist but there is more than enough pirating and plagerism to go around without wasting our breath and confusing the issue with static about what seems to amount to legal and "fair use."

I think we can dial this back a bit and go back to the work we really love to do

Just my $.02
Regards
Richard

You make some excellent points there. They're just worried that no one asked them first even if they are credited.
But with everyone so protective of their work it can sometimes be understandable.

What will happen when one day all original ideas run out? there are only so many ways you can look at things. So many poses, so many styles...
People may end up drawing in a style similar to someone else whose work they have never seen in their life before!

... sorry... that was a bit random... ignore the last paragraph o_o

I understand what you are saying, but they should at least link back to the artist's page from which they took the work. The images of mine I found on Flickr had no such link. Nor idd the person re-posting my work on their own gallery state that I was the artist. They seemed to imply that the gallery owner had taken the photographs. My name appeared in the images and/or the titles only because they either hadn't changed the name or hadn't removed the copyright text I place on all my images.

Hi Richard,

Hope this wasn't private. When were you on the computer? I turned on the computer only after you left and this appeared to have been opened already. Ah, life's sweet mysteries -

Your ever-lovin' m-o-l (Claire)
